Yes, that makes a considerable amount of sense, and is precisely
the point.
I don't know C++ well enough to know how far you can go with templates,
but putting it into a library makes a great deal of sense, if that is
feasible.
I will post something on the cross-purposes issue, just to explain
some of the C (not C++) background, because it is relevant to the
assertion that this whole issue is a storm in a teacup. But I now
realise that calling 'atomic' a cv-qualifier was a mistake :-(
